The resettlement project was an immediate response to the need for temporary relief as a result of the massive fire that destroyed the Shek Kip Mei squatter area on Christmas Eve 1953, when over 53,000 Chinese immigrants lost their makeshift homes overnight. However, it was also hailed as a new era for Government public housing programmes and the need to accommodate the rapidly growing population of the 1960s and 70s.

Many Hong Kong citizens share the experience of growing up witnessing the territory's rapid transformation from a series of rural villages into the present international metropolis. Life on the Shek Kip Mei Estate can, in many ways, be interpreted as a microcosm of wider society. The estate buildings were essentially concrete bunkers lacking the basics of doors and windows, let alone the relative luxury of electricity and running water. A family of five to eight persons was crammed into a cubicle of about 120 - 200 square feet (11 - 18 square metres), with over 10 households sharing a public toilet/bathroom on the same floor... bygone days of communal living.

Intended to be a temporary resettlement, 50 years later the apartments in the Shek Kip Mei Estate are still rented out by the Government. Photojournalist Vincent Yu captured life on Shek Kip Mei Estate through his lens during its last phase of existence, before the oldest blocks were demolished in November 2006. His images document some 200 elderly residents and their 'homes' before they were resettled to modern high-rises, many having inhabited the crumbling estate for over five decades.

—

COLOPHON

Photography by Vincent Yu
Published by MCCM Creations

Language: English
Format: Softcover with fabric cover, 176 pages
Dimensions: 178 x 23 x 239 mm
Edition: First
ISBN-13: 9789889926632
Publication Date: 2010
Tenko is a photobook and collaboration between Japanese photographers Hanayo and Hajime Sawatari.

For Japanese artist Hanayo, her beloved daughter Tenko has always been an important subject. It was originally conceived by art critic Koji Taki (1928-2011) and photographer Takuma Nakahira (1938-2015), with poet Takahiko Okada (1939-1997) and photographer Yutaka Takanashi as dojin members. The subtitle for the magazine was “Provocative Materials for Thought”, and each issue was composed of photographs, essays and poems. After releasing the second and third issue with Daido Moriyama as a subsequent member, the group broke up with their last publication First, Abandon the World of Pseudo-Certainty - an overview edition of the three issues. Provoke’s grainy, blurry, and out-of-focus photographs were initially ridiculed as are-bure-boke and stirred a great deal of controversy, yet it had created a strong impact inside and outside of the photography world during that time. However, today, Provoke has become an extremely rare book and very few people have seen the original.

Why does Provoke matter today? Provoke has been attracting increasing attention in recent years, in and out of Japan. In 2016, an extensive photography exhibition entitled Provoke: Between Protest and Performance Photography in Japan, 1960-1975 opened first in Austria, then toured to Switzerland, France and the United States. Provoke has challenged existing photographic conventions and posed fundamental questions of visual perception, in the midst of the social and political upheaval during the late sixties. Now the world is gradually recognising and re-examining its significance in a multitude of contexts.

—

COLOPHON

Published by Nitesha

Language: English, Japanese, Chinese
Publication Date: 2022
Format and Dimensions:
PROVOKE 1: Softcover, 68 pages, 21 x 21 cm
PROVOKE 2: Softcover, 110 pages, 24.2 x 18 cm
PROVOKE 3: Softcover, 110 pages, 24 x 18.4 cm.
PROVOKE Textbook (inc. As the practice of small-scale publishing has increased among artists, curators, and collectives as a method of mediating their practices in the major cities in Asia over the past couple of years, activities related to producing their output and circulating it have been stimulated. Instead of looking at the culture surrounding small-scale publishing as an individual and independent phenomenon, we attempt to integrate it into its historical and local contexts. To do so, we've invited artists/teams, who practice in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, and the Middle East. They are neither publishing experts in the traditional meaning of the term, nor writers of artist books. Instead, they are graphic designers; artists using web, video, or sound; curators; infoshop, etc.—those who form and connect the conditions of culture as we encounter it today. Their loosely shared attitudes and sensibilities, while not offering a direct answer to the question “What is small-scale publishing?”, offer an opportunity to approach and utilize publishing as a “method.”

Along with the exhibited books, the space named the “Asia Art Publication Directory” introduces books and documents by about forty publishing initiatives active all over Asia. They are publishing collectives practicing in sixteen cities in Asia, bookshops, art book fairs, archives, artist-run spaces, researchers, and so on. Through their activities, we can imagine the terrain of small-scale publishing in Asia. More detailed information about their practice and their local context is available in the interviews included in the research publication.

Publishing as Method features an interview with the founders of Slow Burn Books, Scott Heinrich and Nikki Lam.

—

COLOPHON

Edited by Lim Kyung Yong
Published by Mediabus

IBSN: 9791190434430
Publication Date: April 2023

Cacher is a photobook by Vietnamese photographer, Thy Tran.

Taken between 2015 and 2017, Cacher is a photographic representation of the tension present within queer and intimate relationships.

French for ‘to hide’, Cacher borrows its title from Roland Barthes’ 1977 ‘A Lover’s Discourse’.

“I want you to know that I am hiding something from you.”
The Banda Journal highlights the legacy of centuries-long colonization and exploitation in the remote Indonesian Banda Islands. Beginning with an explosion of pepper grenades hijacking a bakery, Eat A Chili interweaves a disparate cast of thrill seekers, veering between language and image to reveal a cross-border feast blending the uncanny and emotional synesthesia of the everyday. The result is a science fiction ode to the pleasurable burns kindled by the spiciest of all.

Eat A Chili is the debut publication by visual artist Wei Weng, borne from a disturbingly spicy meal in her adopted home of Copenhagen. Synesthetically struck by the fiery onslaught of spice with a wicked vision, Weng began to sprinkle visual fragments from her photo archive with a blend of short stories, much like the multi-sensory layers of heat emanating and reverberating from human taste receptors.

Within this re-staging a series of surreal encounters, Weng worked in close collaboration with photographer Jan Rosseel to sift through a decade of her photographic work, tracing the experience of metaphorical and physical burn through time and place. Eat A Chili is a bilingual publication that can be read in two languages and in two directions. The result can therefore be read visually and textually both from left to right, but also right to left, challenging the usual linearity of the western cultural imagination.

With a compilation of images from China, Myanmar, Thailand, Australia, the United States, and Denmark, Eat A Chili feast upon the ways in which image-making crosses culture and constructs meaning. The book’s intertwined narrative is reflective of Weng’s personal roots shaped by migration. Through a science fictional lens, the artist pay tribute to the wonders of capsaicin—a hardly ascetic meditation upon the uncanny and emotional synesthesia of the everyday.

—

COLOPHON

Photography and Text by Wei Weng
Designed by Jan Rosseel

Language: Bilingual (English, Chinese)
Format: Softcover, 152 pages
Dimensions: 130 x 180 mm
Edition: First
ISBN: 9788797261309
Publication Date: February 2021

Water Refuge is an artist book by visual artist, Wei Weng.

Exploring notions of primal kinship, Water Refuge seeks to connect the artist’s temporary home (Denmark) with her subject (swimmers), the material economy, and the ethereal ocean mother.

Operating between her home studio and urban waterside, Wei Weng has documented the ritual of open sea swimmers.

On one hand, Wei Weng transforms household waste and found objects by using traditional lacquer techniques such as egg shell inlay and fabric binding.
