A Kind of Magic is a photobook by Indonesian photographer, Julian Tan.
Rooted in the artist’s personal displacement from Indonesia in 1998, a period marked by significant societal unrest and racial tension, A Kind of Magic is a photographic journey through a city that no longer exists.
Traversing between imagined and experienced realities, the images serve as a portal to a temporal landscape that has been irrevocably altered by external forces. Intimate yet universal, Juliana Tan offers a resonant exploration of displacement, remembrance, and the enduring quest to reclaim our own story.
The photobook also features two essays by Indonesian writers Sylvie Tanaga and artist Metta Setiandi, both of whom were also impacted by political upheaval during their childhoods.
